Understanding and Explaining IELTS Band Scores

After completing your IELTS test, you will receive an overall band score from 0 to 9. You will also receive a separate band score for each of the four test components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The IELTS band scale indicates your level of English proficiency, with each score representing a particular degree of language ability.

How Are IELTS Band Scores Calculated?

IELTS scores are reported on a scale from 0 to 9. Each test component is assessed separately, and the four individual band scores are combined to determine your overall IELTS band score.

How individual section scores are determined:

• Listening and Reading: You receive one mark for every correct answer. Your total number of correct responses is then converted into an IELTS band score using the appropriate scoring scale.
• Writing and Speaking: Trained examiners evaluate your performance using specific assessment criteria. Writing is assessed for areas such as task achievement, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammatical range and accuracy. Speaking is evaluated according to fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.

How Is the Overall IELTS Band Score Calculated?

Your overall IELTS band score is calculated by taking the average of your four individual section scores. The resulting figure is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band.

How Half-Band Scores Are Rounded

• If the average score ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next half band. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5.
• If the average score ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band. For example, an average of 6.75 becomes 7.0.

IELTS Band Score Descriptions for Academic and General Training

The IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training tests use the same nine-band scoring scale. Each band describes a different level of English language proficiency.

Band 9: Expert User

• The test taker demonstrates complete and highly effective command of English.
• Language is used accurately, fluently, and appropriately, with a strong understanding of meaning in different contexts.

Band 8: Very Good User

• The test taker has a strong command of English, with only occasional inconsistencies or inappropriate language use.
• They may experience some difficulty in unfamiliar situations but can understand and communicate complex, detailed ideas effectively.

Band 7: Good User

• The test taker demonstrates effective command of English, although occasional errors, inappropriate usage, or misunderstandings may occur.
• They can generally manage complex language and follow detailed reasoning.

Band 6: Competent User

• The test taker has a generally effective command of English despite some errors, misunderstandings, and inappropriate language use.
• They can understand and communicate reasonably complex ideas, especially in familiar situations.

Band 5: Modest User

• The test taker has a limited but functional command of English and can understand the general meaning in many situations, although frequent mistakes may occur.
• They can manage basic communication related to familiar areas, including their field of work or study.

Band 4: Limited User

• The test taker's English ability is mainly limited to familiar situations.
• They frequently experience difficulties with understanding and expressing ideas.

Band 3: Extremely Limited User

• The test taker can communicate and understand only general meaning in highly familiar situations.
• Communication often breaks down because of significant difficulties with English.

Band 2: Intermittent User

• The test taker has considerable difficulty understanding both spoken and written English.
• Communication is possible only in very limited circumstances.

Band 1: Non-User

• The test taker has essentially no ability to use English.
• They may recognise or use only a few isolated words.

Band 0: Did Not Attempt the Test

• The test taker did not provide answers or complete the test as required.

IELTS Writing Band Score and What It Means

IELTS examiners assess your Writing performance using four key criteria. Each criterion contributes to your task score:

• Task achievement and task response: Task 1 is assessed for task achievement, while Task 2 is evaluated based on how effectively you respond to the question.
• Coherence and cohesion: Measures how clearly your ideas are organised, connected, and developed throughout your response.
• Lexical resource: Evaluates the range, accuracy, and appropriate use of your vocabulary.
• Grammatical range and accuracy: Assesses the variety and correctness of the grammatical structures you use.

Each Writing task is assessed separately, with the four criteria receiving equal weighting within that task. Your score for each task is based on the average performance across these criteria. Task 2 contributes more to the final Writing band score than Task 1.

IELTS Speaking Band Score and What It Means

Your Speaking performance is evaluated by a trained IELTS examiner using four equally weighted assessment criteria:

• Fluency and coherence: Assesses how smoothly you communicate and how logically you organise and connect your ideas.
• Lexical resource: Measures the range and accuracy of the vocabulary you use when expressing your ideas.
• Grammatical range and accuracy: Evaluates the variety and accuracy of your grammatical structures.
• Pronunciation: Assesses how clearly and effectively you produce English sounds so that your speech can be understood.

All four criteria carry equal weight. Your performance across these areas is combined to determine your overall IELTS Speaking band score.
