What Does the IELTS Reading Test Assess?
The IELTS Reading test measures your ability to understand, interpret, and evaluate written English. You will read three passages and answer 40 questions designed to assess skills such as locating information, identifying the writer's ideas, understanding supporting details, and interpreting meaning from context. The test evaluates how effectively you understand written information, not simply how quickly you can read.
IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training use different types of reading texts, but both versions assess the fundamental reading skills required to understand written English.
IELTS Reading Test Format
| Feature | Academic | General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 60 minutes | 60 minutes |
| Questions | 40 | 40 |
| Passages | 3 | 3 |
| Extra Transfer Time | No | No |
Note: Both versions follow a similar overall structure, but the reading material is different. IELTS Academic passages are generally taken from sources such as books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. IELTS General Training focuses more on texts related to everyday life, workplace situations, and social contexts.
The key skills assessed include:
- Identify the main idea: Recognise the central topic, purpose, or message of a passage without getting distracted by minor details.
- Locate specific information: Quickly find relevant names, dates, numbers, places, facts, and other details within the text.
- Understand supporting details: Identify information that explains, illustrates, or expands on the writer's main points.
- Recognise opinions and attitudes: Distinguish factual information from opinions and understand the writer's perspective.
- Understand implied meaning: Work out ideas or conclusions that are suggested rather than explicitly stated.
- Follow the development of an argument: Understand how ideas are organised and how different points connect throughout a passage.
- Understand vocabulary in context: Use the surrounding information to work out the meaning of unfamiliar words rather than relying only on memorised definitions.
Common IELTS Reading Test Mistakes at Each Band Level
The types of difficulties you experience can vary depending on your current level. Understanding common mistakes at different band levels can help you make your preparation more targeted and avoid unnecessary loss of marks.
Band 5–5.5
Common challenges include:
- Reading every word instead of quickly identifying the main idea
- Spending too much time on a single passage
- Taking too long to locate relevant information
- Struggling to recognise paraphrased information
- Leaving questions unanswered because of ineffective time management
How to improve:
- Practise skimming and scanning regularly
- Expand your everyday and academic vocabulary
- Complete timed Reading exercises to improve speed and accuracy
Band 6–6.5
Common mistakes include:
- Confusing False and Not Given responses
- Missing answers because information is expressed through synonyms or paraphrases
- Spending excessive time on particularly difficult questions
- Misunderstanding the writer's opinion or attitude
How to improve:
- Study common IELTS paraphrasing techniques and patterns
- Base your answers on evidence contained in the passage rather than your personal knowledge
- Move to the next question when you are spending too long on one response and return to it later if time permits
Band 7–7.5
Candidates working towards Band 7 may lose marks by:
- Overanalysing questions that have relatively straightforward answers
- Missing implied meanings or conclusions
- Losing concentration while reading lengthy passages
- Failing to follow word limits in completion questions
How to improve:
- Practise identifying inferences and the writer's attitude
- Read a broad range of English-language articles, newspapers, and journals
- Analyse incorrect answers to identify repeated weaknesses and patterns
Band 8–9
Even experienced candidates can lose marks through:
- Careless spelling errors
- Grammar mistakes in sentence-completion answers
- Changing a correct answer without sufficient reason during the final review
- Misreading instructions or failing to follow word limits
How to improve:
- Reserve a few minutes at the end to review your answers
- Check spelling, grammar, instructions, and word limits carefully
- Complete full-length Reading tests under realistic time conditions
How to Approach the IELTS Reading Test
A structured approach can help you use the 60-minute test period effectively and avoid spending too much time on individual questions. Follow these steps to develop a more efficient Reading strategy.
Step 1: Understand the Question Type
Before working through the passage, identify the type of question you need to answer. Common formats include:
- Multiple Choice
- True/False/Not Given
- Matching Headings
- Sentence Completion
- Summary Completion
- Short Answer Questions
Recognising the question type helps you select the most appropriate strategy for finding the answer.
Step 2: Skim the Passage
Use the opening minute to quickly review the passage and establish:
- The general topic
- The structure and organisation of the paragraphs
- The main ideas presented in the text
Avoid trying to understand every sentence during this initial reading.
Step 3: Read the Questions Carefully
Pay attention to important keywords, including:
- Names
- Dates
- Numbers
- Places
- Technical terms
Also consider possible synonyms or alternative expressions that the passage may use instead of the exact words in the question.
Step 4: Scan for Keywords and Synonyms
Search the passage for the relevant keywords or their paraphrased forms. IELTS questions frequently use different wording from the passage, so looking only for an exact word match may cause you to miss the correct information.
Step 5: Read the Relevant Section in Detail
After locating the likely part of the passage:
- Read the relevant sentences carefully
- Use only information provided in the passage to determine your answer
- Avoid relying on personal knowledge, assumptions, or outside information
Step 6: Manage Your Time
A practical approach to time management is:
- Passage 1: Approximately 15–17 minutes
- Passage 2: Approximately 20 minutes
- Passage 3: Approximately 23–25 minutes
If you are uncertain about an answer, make your best choice and continue. Spending too much time on one question can leave you without enough time for questions you could answer more easily.
Final Review
Use the final few minutes to look for simple errors that could cost you marks. Make sure to:
- Check the spelling of your answers
- Review grammar where it is relevant to the question
- Confirm that you have followed all word limits
- Make sure every question has been answered
